The paper outlines the pilot of a mentor training programme in which senior year university students are trained and supported to mentor first-year students, by first learning to mentor each other. Re-framing relationships of status, power and responsibility is a key theme in the programme.

About the
Author

James Walker is Professor of Education at the University of Western Sydney. He is currently developing a peer mentoring programme for the university, which draws on his many years of research and practical experience working with young people. He has published widely on youth culture, self-directed learning, performance improvement, and educational philosophy, including the book Louts and Legends: Male Youth Culture in an Inner City School. James is also interested in vocational, professional and organisational learning and does research and consultancy work for a variety of business, government and educational organisations.
