A mentoring programme was established in 1997 for students in the Environmental Science programme at Murdoch University. While the programme has demonstrated a high degree of student satisfaction and increased student retention in first year, it has continued to evolve to suit the needs of the students. Increasingly, the programme is focussing on small social groups meeting over coffee once a week.

Peter Tapsell has a B.Sc in Geology, Post Grad Dip. in Environmental Impact Assessment and is currently completing an M.Phil in Environmental Science. Besides lecturing in Environmental Science, Peter has been jointly involved in co-ordinating the Environmental Science mentoring programme since its inception.
