The Building Blocks to the Future Mentoring Programme was established in the Fall of 1995 under the guidance of Twyla McGhee, Coordinator Multicultural Programmes, School of Business and Ada M. Walker, Senior Career Counsellor, Career Development Center, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The programme serves as a comprehensive retention and professional development programme for students. UWM junior and senior minority students majoring in business administration are mentored by established professionals in the same career fields. Since the programme's inception, over 100 mentors and proteges have been paired.
The programme has two components - professional development and academic development. Professional development is designed to assist the junior and senior students with job readiness/placement skills. The academic development component is for freshmen and sophomore interested in becoming business majors; they are mentored by UWM faculty/staff or juniors and seniors in the School of Business, and the emphasis is on academic readiness/retention.
