About the Author

Judith MacCallum lectures in Educational Psychology in the School of Education, Murdoch University, and has been involved in teaching in secondary and tertiary institutions since 1974. Her main teaching and research interests are student motivation and learning, and learning through collaboration with others. Much of her recent professional activity has revolved around collaborative learning. She was involved in developing the 'collaborative' outcomes in the WA Curriculum Framework, and runs workshops on collaborative learning for teacher groups. Judy was a member of the team that developed a unit of study to support the STAR Programme at Murdoch. Currently, Judy is the chief researcher on two DETYA research projects, 'What makes an effective role model programme?' and 'Mentoring in Schools'.

Susan Beltman is a registered School Psychologist, sessional lecturer and tutor at Murdoch University and the University of Notre Dame. Susan has also planned and conducted training for staff and students involved in peer support programmes in secondary schools. She strongly believes that peer support and tutoring, and one-to-one and small group mentoring are powerful tools that can assist individuals to maximise their potential. While completing her PhD, Susan is involved in a train-the-trainer type project with an aviation company, and on the two DETYA-funded projects mentioned above.
