The application of Peer Tutoring on the learning enhancement of students in project work and construction technology

Ann Chien Lo, Hong Kong.

A research project to study and evaluate the implementation of using senior students as peer tutors to enhance student-centred learning in engineering project work. The B.Sc(Hons) programme in Building Engineering and Management is a course with professional recognition for the training of construction project managers. The studentsÕ main academic study focus is on the concepts and theories of construction technology, management, safety, economics and law that are related to the building works in the early period of the programme. Students gradually need to learn to integrate the different subject areas and technical knowledge they have gained for the practical application into the building work and hence the development of professionalism. In this programme, these qualities are developed through the integrated project with strong application of construction technology. Yet, very often, students encounter quite a number of difficulties in their problem-based approach integrated project such as the thorough understanding and application of integrated engineering and technological knowledge, the group cohesion/effort, communication and presentation, and time/project management. In order to enhance the extrinsic and intrinsic learning and address the areas of difficulties found by students, peer tutoring is sought to improve the situation.
