The Staff/Student Mentor Programme is based on a collaborative approach to supporting individual students, identified to be at risk, to improve their educational performance.
The target groups of students are those in Years 8 to 10.
The paper focusses on the aims of the programme; methods of identification of students at educational risk; the process of implementing the programme at a whole school level; value of the mentoring relationship between staff and students, and the positive outcomes experienced. It also includes issues such as
- developing the programme at a whole school level
- procedures involved in securing resources and support from school administration and general staff
- types of proformas use in the programme
- coordination and implementation of the programme
and
- selection of teacher mentors.

About the
Author

Linda Kwok has worked, mainly in secondary schools, as a school psychologist for 20 years. She is particularly interested in working at a systems level in schools to develop programmes to support students with specific needs. She has been responsible, in collaboration with other staff members, for developing and implementing the Staff/Student Mentor programme at Swanbourne Senior High School.
