Using peer tutors in science classes

Darren Hamley, Willetton Senior High School, Western Australia.

Peer tutors are of limited benefit in science classes if the classroom teacher does not provide a suitable learning environment. This workshop explored the types of activities that teachers should prepare to gain the most benefit from peer tutors. In particular it looked at establishing student-centred research in science classes, centring on areas of interest and expertise of both the students and the tutors. Universities have a great deal to offer in terms of knowledge, expertise and equipment. Peer tutors are the school link to these invaluable resources.
